Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA)
The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), Center for National Truck Statistics has conducted an annual national survey on fatal accidents involving medium and heavy trucks since 1980. The resulting data file is called Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA).

The TIFA file is a census of all medium and heavy trucks involved in a fatal accident in the United States. The TIFA database provides coverage of all medium and heavy trucks recorded in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) file produced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). TIFA combines vehicle, accident, and occupant records from FARS with information about the physical configuration and operating authority of the truck from the TIFA survey. The combination of the FARS accident level variables with the physical detail of the TIFA survey produces the most detailed account of fatal truck accidents available.
Records of medium and heavy trucks involved in fatal accidents are extracted from the FARS file, and police reports for each accident are acquired. The staff at Center for National Truck Statistics then contacts some knowledgeable person - usually a driver, owner, or safety director - to verify that the vehicle is a truck and to conduct a detailed survey of each truck's physical configuration at the time of the accident.
Trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, primarily pickups, are excluded as nonsample, as are emergency vehicles and other non-trucks.
